Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas
Project SEARCH in Austin ISD will be moving along with all of the staff from University Medical Center Brackenridge (UMCB) to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas (DSMC-UT). We are excited to start a new year in August 2017 in the brand new hospital. The associates at DSMC-UT are extremely supportive of Project SEARCH and the interns joining us each year become well integrated into their departments and the hospital. 28 interns have completed Project SEARCH at UMCB as of June 2017 with an employment rate of 89%.
While participating in Project SEARCH the interns complete 3 different rotations in a variety of departments throughout the hospital to gain vocational skills. They work beside associates in each department as well as a job coach to complete tasks that support the operation of the hospital. They learn work skills in the Pharmacy, Sterile Processing, Materials Management, Surgical Services, Pre-admission Testing, Interpreter Services, Patient Access, Imaging, Bio-med, Simulation Lab, Clinical Education Center, Food and Nutrition Services, and Environmental Services.
Each day after they are done with their internships, the interns come to the classroom where they continue to hone their independent living and work skills. They learn money management, social skills, personal health care, resume building, cooking, interpersonal skills, and interview techniques. When interns graduate from Project SEARCH in June, they will use the skills that they have acquired and apply for competitive employment in the hospital and throughout the community.
